Our commitment to access
Designing for Elders, mob, and everyone who comes to this site
Our commitment
Yurruungga Aboriginal Corporation (YAC) is a community organisation on Gumbaynggirr Country. Access is not an afterthought for us — it is a cultural obligation. We build this website so Elders can use it comfortably on a phone, so community members with low vision or limited dexterity can move through it without frustration, and so people on slow connections in regional areas are not locked out.
We design and test against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, and aim for AAA where we can. We use plain English. We put the most important things first. Nobody should need a technical background to find an event, read a yarn, or get in touch with us.
What we've built in
The following are baked into the site, not optional extras:
- Skip-to-content link for keyboard and screen reader users to bypass the header on every page.
- Minimum 48×48px touch targets on all interactive elements — sized for Elders and anyone tapping on mobile.
- Reduced-motion support — if your device has “reduce motion” turned on, animations and transitions respect that setting.
- Colour contrast audited to WCAG AA (and AAA where possible) — our core body text sits at a 12.6:1 contrast ratio.
- Keyboard navigable throughout — every menu, form, modal, and link can be reached and operated without a mouse.
- Clear focus indicators on every interactive element, so you always know where you are on the page.
- Captions on video content and descriptive alt text on meaningful imagery.
- Semantic headings and landmarks so screen readers can navigate the structure of each page.
- Mobile-first layouts — the site is designed for a phone first, then scaled up, because that is how most of our community visits.
Known limitations
We are a small community organisation and we are continuously improving. Some older content imported from previous sites may not yet meet our current standards. Some third-party embeds (for example payment forms) are governed by the provider's own accessibility practices, though we choose providers with good track records.
If you encounter a barrier anywhere on this site — a link you can't reach, text you can't read, a form you can't complete — we want to hear about it. Your feedback is the fastest way we improve.
Tell us
We welcome access requests in whatever form suits you best. This includes large-print versions of materials, alternative formats (plain text, audio, printed copies), translated or interpreted content, and in-person yarning where that's easier than using a screen. Let us know what you need and we will do our best to provide it.
